A Budget Hearing for the republished General Fund, At-Risk Budget and Special Education Budget was held from 7:00 PM to 7:05 PM.

President Yocum called the meeting to order with all board members present except for Craghead and Falk.

Silva moved to approve the amended agenda that added some names for employment and acceptance of a donation.  Hund seconded.  Motion carried 5-0.

Dr. Andersen presented information in regards to the service scholarship that the Gideon family was establishing in their son Garren’s memory.  Also, they were donating money to the Vo-Ag department at WHS to be used exclusively for equipment.  Yocum moved to accept the $1500 donation from the Gideon family to purchase Vo-Ag equipment at WHS.  McCue seconded.  Motion carried 5-0.

WHS Principal Andersen announced that Baccalaureate service for WHS Seniors will be held Saturday, May 17th, at St. John Lutheran Church.

Transportation/Maintenance Director Joe Zeller informed the board of a sewer back-up problem at the Vo-Ag shop.  Also, the stage mats in the Junior High gym have been repaired by the company, under warranty, and have been re-hung.  There was no cost to the district.

Hund moved to approve the consent agenda.  McCue seconded.  Motion carried 5-0.  The consent agenda included: Approved the April 14th Regular Board Meeting minutes;  Approved the Treasurer’s report;  Approved payment of bills totaling $157,610.77;  Approved AGS First Grade field trip to KC;  Approved contract with 21st Century Learning Center; Approved republished General Fund, At-Risk Fund and Special Education Fund for the 2007-08 year; and Approved early graduation in December, 2008 for Billy Price, if all requirements are met.

Silva moved to approve sponsoring up to four WHS students, at $125 each (1/2 cost), to attend KSHSAA Student Council Leadership Workshop this July at ESU.

Breiner moved to approve the District Insurance Bid from EMC for $71,968, that included all the property, liability, vehicle, workers compensation and board errors and omissions insurance for the district.

Yocum moved to approve the WHS Student Handbook for 2008-09 school year, as amended.  Silva seconded.  Motion carried 5-0.

There was a discussion of possible capital outlay projects for the summer. Hund moved to approve the epoxy flooring projects by 4 State Maintenance Supply for:  Alma Grade School, $9,399.50 and WHS, $12,698.75.  Yocum  seconded.  Motion carried 5-0.  The board wants Joe Zeller and  Supt. Mahan to prioritize the carpet bids and approve as needed. 

The Board took a 7 minute break.

Yocum moved to go into executive session for 15 minutes to discuss non-elected personnel.  The purpose of the session was to protect the privacy interests of an identifiable individual.  Hund seconded.   Motion carried 5-0.  The Board reconvened at 8:45 PM.

Yocum moved to go into executive session for 15 minutes to discuss negotiations.  The purpose of the session was to protect the district’s right to the confidentiality of its negotiating position, and the public interest.  Breiner seconded.  Motion carried 4-0, with Hund, McCue, Yocum and Breiner voting yes.  The board reconvened at 9:00 PM.

Student Summer Help:  John TenEyck, Caleb Johnson, Justin Logan and Spencer Parker

Summer School Teachers and Aides:  Brian Henry, Sara Alderman, Susan Gronquist, Norma Conrad, Pam Bales, Bobbi Murray, Debbie DeSelms, and Janice Chamberlin

WHS Science Instructor, Bette Grauer

New Junior High teacher, Ruth Eichhorn

Music Instructor, Richard Philbrook

Junior High Athletic Director, Jamie Hafenstine

WHS Athletic Director, Jeron Weisshaar

Junior High Custodian, James Schmitz

Coaches for 08-09 Year:  JH Head Track Coaches, Don Ginavan and Bobbi Murray;  Whitney Giesick WHS Asst. Volleyball;  Joey Heersche, Junior High Wrestling; and Amy Wilson, Head JH Volleyball

Yocum moved to regretfully accept the resignation of Lynette Stuewe as MCVMS Custodian.  Hund seconded.  Motion carried 5-0.

The following was discussed in the Superintendent/Board Members Forum:  Supt. Mahan wanted to publicly thank Principal Schuckman for getting the day care license completed.  There was a consensus of the board to move ahead with the classroom addition at MHGS.  The Alma Day Care license was received and we are planning on opening the larger day care center August 4th.  There will be a retirement reception for Carmen Hiegert on Sunday, May 25th, at MCVJH, from 2 to 4 PM.  The annual budget workshop will be held at Washburn Rural Middle School on Tuesday, June 17th.  Supt. Mahan will work with the principals in regards to any changes in field trips for next year due to high fuel costs.  The end of the year district breakfast will be held at AGS on Wednesday, May 21st, at 8:30 AM.  All board members are invited to attend.  WHS is thinking about adding a silk screening class for next year.  Two carports have been ordered to be placed behind the district office to protect school vehicles.  Board Member Duane Hund gave a report on the KASB Spring Regional meeting he attended last week at Clay Center. 

Yocum moved to adjourn.  Breiner seconded.  Motion carried 5-0.  The meeting was adjourned at 9:40 PM.
