President Bob Roth called the regular meeting to order with all of the board members present.

Breiner moved to approve the amended agenda to include: Recognition of WHS vocal students; request to have Wabaunsee High School placed on the National Register of Historic Places; Employment Transfer; Employment Hire; and add MCVJH and WHS Handbooks for discussion. Hund seconded. Motion carried 7-0.

Music teacher Sue Yocum introduced the high school vocal students who had received a one rating at the state music competition.

Mr. Schuckman updated the board on all day kindergarten.

Superintendent Rivers informed the board that the plans for the Maple Hill Air Conditioning project are complete and have been sent out. June 8th will be the bid opening date for this project.

Michelle McAfee, representing the Workforce Investment Act Project, read a letter to the board regarding the project.

Principal Wagner stated that the 6th grade orientation at the Junior High went well. The name of the new 5th/6th grade center, selected by parents and students, is Mill Creek Valley Middle School.

Principal Mike Ford reviewed the proposed Pass Key, remediation and enrichment, program with the Board. He also presented the WHS Handbook for discussion.

Technology Director Don Westhoff stated summer work on the computer labs is being organized.

Kathy Hendricks addressed the board regarding future foreign travel plans.

Yocum moved to approve the consent agenda. Wilson seconded. Motion carried 7-0. The consent agenda included: Approval of the April 7th regular meeting minutes and the special meeting minutes of April 28th, 2004; Approved the Treasurer’s report; Approved payment of bills totaling $121,702.75; Accepted the PDC minutes from April 5th and May 3rd; Accepted transportation/maintenance supervisor’s report; and Accepted the food service supervisor’s report.

The Board took a ten minute break and reconvened at 8:45 PM

Roth moved to go into Executive Session for 20 minutes to discuss non-elected personnel and that the Board return to the open meeting at 9:10 PM in this room. The session was to protect the privacy interests of an identifiable individual. Hund seconded. Motion carried 7-0. This session included the board members and the Superintendent. Patron Tim Hund joined the session at 8:50 PM and left the session at 8:55 PM. Principal Ford entered the session at 8:55 PM. The Board reconvened at 9:10 PM.

The Handbooks for Wabaunsee High School, Mill Creek Valley Junior High, and Mill Creek Valley Middle School will be reviewed and will be given to the Board for approval at the regular June board meeting.

Roth moved to terminate the Workforce Investment Act Project with Heartland Works, Inc. Breiner seconded. Motion carried 7-0.

Yocum moved to enter into a contract with Gaye Hamilton, with District Mapper Consulting, to provide a redistricting analysis and consultation services for possible action on modification of board member district boundaries. Roth seconded. Motion carried 7-0.

The second reading of Board Policy JBC-Enrollment was tabled. Supt. Rivers will seek legal advice regarding this policy and report to the Board at the June regular board meeting.

Yocum moved to accept the bid of $9,650.70 from Kent Fence Company for projects at AGS, PGS and MCVJH. The project at MHGS will be deferred. Hund seconded. Motion carried 7-0.

The Board would like Superintendent Rivers to obtain more information regarding the Kansas State Historical Society’s request to put Wabaunsee High School on its list of historic sites.

Roth moved to regretfully accept the resignation of Ray Roberts, Custodian, and Rhonda Fox, Math Instructor. Yocum seconded. Motion carried 7-0.

Wilson moved to transfer Charles Gann from WHS Science to Math for one year. Yocum seconded. Motion carried 7-0.

Yocum moved to approve: Carrie Minton to teach five periods a day at WHS that includes Physical Education and Business for one year, and to be Head Girls’ Basketball Coach for one year; Stan Vopata as WHS Custodian; and Dina Wingfield as WHS Science Instructor. Hund seconded. Motion carried 7-0.

Roth moved to go into executive session for 10 minutes to discuss negotiations. The session is required to protect the negotiating position of the school board. Healey seconded. Motion carried 7-0. The board reconvened at 9:47.

Craghead moved to adjourn. Yocum seconded. Motion carried 7-0. The meeting was adjourned at 9:50 PM.
