FCCLA Adopt A Grandparent Program
Wabaunsee High School FCCLA members – Sierra Barron, Kendra Haller and Jill Wenderott are working with the Alma Manor this school term. The goal of their project is to match young people with Alma Manor residents to benefit both age groups.
Beginning in September, these FCCLA members wrote a Youth as Resources Grant and were fortunate to receive funding for their project. Through the Youth as Resources Grant, they were able to purchase three year long large print magazine subscriptions (Reader’s Digest, Guidepost and National Geographic), reading books, sing along videos, a karaoke machine with Christmas CD’s, coloring books and crayons for the Manor – all of which allow WHS students and Alma Manor residents to have fun group activities. With the money left over, future plans include planting a garden and flower bed in the spring for the residents to enjoy.
During this past school term, WHS FCCLA members have helped decorate the Manor for Halloween, handed out candy to the residents, spent time and colored with the residents during Thanksgiving, and decorated their room doors at Christmastime. Presently, we are making name tags for their meal table and large bingo cards to help all the residents better enjoy playing bingo. Many other plans are in the works including a fashion show of WHS students on prom evening.
This has been a fun and rewarding project for our FCCLA members. We would like to thank everyone who helped us make this possible including WHS students and staff, Mrs. Lyn Posey – Alma Manor, FCCLA chapter members and most of all “Youth as Resources” which enabled us to help brighten the days of the residents.
