News Release

“Be a Bully Buster”

On December 10, Wabaunsee FCCLA members, Melissa Ebert, Chelsey Reves and Marisa Hurla-Schultz, visited the Mill Creek Valley Middle School 5th and 6th graders and presented a program on Bullying Prevention.

The program stressed positive communication so students can learn at a young age to treat their friends and classmates with respect.  The FCCLA members started their presentation by defining bullying – which is defined as “repeatedly and purposely hurting someone with less power”.  They also discussed how bullying can be verbal through hurtful words, physical by hitting or pushing, inter-relational by purposefully leaving someone out of a group, and today can even happen on the internet through online chatting.

Next, the FCCLA members discussed the difference between good natured teasing and bullying, and what a student should do if they observe another student being bullied.  Two handouts were given each of the students that gave the students additional information on the topics discussed that they could take home and share with their families.  Finally, the FCCLA members had each student write down one thing they could do to be a “Bully Buster” at the MCV Middle School.  Using these comments, a Bully Buster chain was made that was left at the Middle School as a reminder to the students to be kind to their friends and classmates.

The Wabaunsee FCCLA Chapter would like to thank the MCV Middle School principal and faculty for allowing us to present to their students on this important topic.
