Most students at Wabaunsee High School do not plan on coloring pictures or playing duck-duck-goose during class time. However, for the students in Mrs. Breiner’s Parenting class, taught by Miss Gartrell (student teacher), these are just a couple of the activities that went on when the high school students hosted an activity day for the Alma Grade School preschoolers.
Mollie Vopata, Bianca Jackson, Rosie Henderson, Ashley TenEyck, Josh Daigler, Lucas Gleue, Chelsea Stuewe, Elizabeth Swicegood, Brieanna Manka, and Monica Wright put lots of time and energy into planning a special day for the preschool students, which included deciding on all of the activities, rearranging Mrs. Breiner’s room, making name tags, gathering supplies, and setting out snacks. Sixteen preschool students along with their teacher, Ms. Wallin, and two other adult helpers arrived to participate in activities such as duck-duck-goose, coloring pictures, and animal charades. Afterwards the Parenting students served finger jell-o, teddy grahams, and juice for snacks. There was just enough time to listen to a story before the preschoolers had to help clean up and wave goodbye.
When asked about what they thought of the experience afterwards, Parenting
students shared mixed emotions about the demands of caring for a young child.
Overall, these ten high school students seemed to enjoy spending some time with
the younger children. “I was excited about today,” said Bianca. “I think the
day went pretty well…it went a lot better than I thought it would,” commented
Elizabeth. “Ms. Tammy must enjoy doing what she does because having to care for
those kids everyday isn’t always fun,” added Chelsea. Ashley agreed, saying, “I
think it would be hard to keep track of that many kids all at once.” In his
written reflection, Josh pretty well summed up everyone’s feelings about the
challenges and rewards of caring for a preschool child, saying that “although it
took a lot of work for just one day, the smiles (from the children) would be the
best reward.”
