WHS Spring Awards Announced

The Spring Awards Program was held Monday, May 5th, at 7:00 pm in the WHS auditorium. Lots of awards were announced. The outstanding male and female athlete awards were voted on by the head varsity coaches. Earning these awards were Denise Ginavan and Dan Terrell. Kansas State University sponsors an Outstanding Math and Science award, which went to Molly Wingfield. Scholar's Bowl also announced this year's letter winners. That list included Dan Terrell, Courtney Hurtig, Molly Wingfield, Kayla Anderson, Logan Craghead, Aaron Grimm, Elyse Schrader, Glenn Hafenstine. A good number of seniors have already been awarded and earned scholarships. The total amount of scholarships awarded to the Class of 2008 is $524,800. The total amount that has been accepted is $279,606. Those figures are as of the awards night Monday. Another award announced was the Mid East League All Academic Award. Requirements for this honor include participation in two sports, lettering in one and have an average 3.5 GPA in the first three quarters of the year. Seniors include: Kayla Anderson, Logan Craghead, Denise Ginavan, Aaron Grimm, Toni Hedke, John Henderson, Elyse Schrader, Kody Songs, Dan Terrell, and Molly Wingfield. Juniors include: Afton Gnadt, Glenn Hafenstine, Chris Haller, Courtney Hurtig, Michael Short, and Cheyenne Thompson. Sophomores include: Sierra Barron, Levi Craghead, Abby Heigert, Mandy Heiman, Schyler Supernaw, Ruth Terrell, and Jill Wenderott. Freshmen include: Chelsea Diepenbrock, Melissa Ebert, Cathy Hafenstine, Marisa Hurla-Schultz, and Randi Tappan.
Update: Skills USA club announced their state conference awards. Placing first in the Promotional Bulletin Board event was Toni Hedke, August Ponte, and Shayna Mangiaracino. Placing first in the Opening and Closing Ceremonies event was Eric Cox, Kody Songs, Scotty Cavanaugh, Chris Haller, Kim Erikson, Zach Larson, and Kyler Cook. Placing second in the Quiz Bowl event was Logan Craghead, Glenn Hafenstine, John TenEyck, Schyler Supernaw, and Brett Slater. Placing second in the Safety Test event was Glenn Hafenstine. Several members of the WHS Industrial Arts classes competed in the Fort Hays State University Technology Fair. Earning blue ribbons in CADD were John TenEyck, Kyle Moege, and Toni Hedke. She also earned a medal. Earning a red ribbon in CADD was Brett Slater. From the Drafting class, Catie Burkhead, August Ponte, Shayna Mangiaracino, and Schyler Supernaw all earned blue ribbons. Supernaw also received a red ribbon in a second event. In Wood Working, Schyler Supernaw earned a blue ribbon, medal and Best 10th Grade Project. Kim Erikson and Curtis Capoun both earned a blue ribbon and medal. Brett Slater and Brad Heine both earned a blue ribbon.
Update: At State FCCLA competition held recently in Wichita, Chelsea Diepenbrock received first place in state which qualifies her for National FCCLA competition in July in Orlando, Florida. Chelsea's event was Career Investigation where she developed a portfolio about her career of choice - which is a Prosecuting Attorney - and then presented her portfolio in a ten minute oral presentation to a panel of judges. She competed against the first place winners from each FCCLA district in Kansas and was the only one that qualified in this event by receiving first place in FCCLA state competition. Scholarships awarded through the Alma Area Foundation include: Elyse Schrader, Glenn and Virginia Czirr; Kayla Anderson, Francis and Catherine Newton; Molly Wingfield, Ada Sage Laverty; Tyler Heiman, Ralph and Juanita TenEyck; Daniel Terrell, Eastern Star; John TenEyck, Ellis and Rowena McKnight; John Henderson, Raymond "Buzz" Johnson; Logan Craghead, Wallace Gronquist; and Chantel Lagergren, Donald Mogge.
