During the May 12 Board of Education meeting, the 6th Grade Athletics Participation Plan was modified and is effective starting with the upcoming 2025-2026 school year. The previous plan had been in effect for the past 3 years and following a review which included gathering input from coaches, a decision was made to modify the plan as stated below. Any questions or concerns should be directed to the athletic director.
6th Grade Athletics Participation Plan
6th grade students WILL NOT be allowed to participate in the following sports: football, wrestling, and track.
6th grade students WILL be allowed to participate on an annual basis in cross country.
Participation in team sports (volleyball, girls basketball and boys basketball) will be reviewed on an annual, individual basis and be dependent on the anticipated total combined number of 7th and 8th grade students. A sign up will be conducted in the school office during April/May each year to determine the anticipated total combined number of 7th and 8th grade students for each team sport. This will allow enough time to notify the incoming 6th grade students and parents of the opportunity to participate in a specific sport so they can choose to participate in summer skill sessions and schedule a sports physical before the start of the season.
Participation will be allowed in a sport if the anticipated total combined number of 7th and 8th grade students is less than 14. If the anticipated total combined number of 7th and 8th grade students is equal to or greater than 14, then participation of 6th grade students will not be allowed. If when the season starts for a team sport and the anticipated total combined number of 7th and 8th grade students ends up being less than 14, participation of 6th grade students will only be allowed in order to have enough participants to field an "A" team.
The sign up conducted this week following the board meeting determined the anticipated total combined number of 7th and 8th grade students for each of the 3 team sports will be equal to or greater than 14, therefore incoming 6th grade students for the 2025-2026 school year will not be offered the opportunity to participate in the 3 team sports, but they do have the opportunity to participate in cross country.
