Today we celebrate a group that keeps our schools running in ways that often go unseen, but never unfelt by our students. It’s National School Lunch Hero Day, and across USD 329, our kitchen teams show up every single day ready to serve far more than a meal. They serve consistency. They serve care. They serve connection.

From early mornings prepping food, to managing inventory and compliance, to working through long lines with a smile, these ladies do it all. And in the middle of that work, they take the time to learn names, check in on kids, and make sure every student feels welcome in their space.

That matters.

For many of our students, the lunchroom is more than just a stop in the day; it’s a place where they are seen, supported, and cared for. That doesn’t happen by accident. It happens because of the people behind the counter.

We are proud of our Charger lunch crew at WES, WJHS, and WHS. They represent the very best of what it means to serve others with pride and purpose. Please join me in thanking our Lunch Heroes today. They truly fuel great days for our students.

USD 329 Families,

Due to the WJHS Track Meet scheduled for Friday, May 8, a large number of our staff will be assigned to support the event or will otherwise be unavailable. As a result, we do not have sufficient staffing to safely operate a full school day. There will be no school for students on Friday, May 8. This will be a staff work day across the district.

We appreciate your understanding as we host a large event that brings many schools to our community. We are proud to represent USD 329 and want to ensure we do so in a well-organized and professional manner. Thank you for your flexibility and continued support.

Charger Nation!

Today, we recognize a group that rarely asks for attention, yet carries one of the most important responsibilities in our system. Our bus drivers show up before the sun rises and finish long after the final bell. They navigate gravel, mud, traffic, and severe weather without hesitation. They make real-time judgment calls that keep our students safe. And along the way, they build relationships, offering a steady presence, a kind word, and a watchful eye for every child who steps on their bus.

Across the course of a year, they safely transport nearly 64,000 student rides in USD 329. That’s not just logistics. That’s trust. That’s care. That’s commitment to something bigger than themselves. In many ways, they are no different from the first responders we rightly admire: quiet professionals who accept responsibility for others and carry it out with consistency and pride.

To our bus drivers: thank you for the miles, the patience, the vigilance, and the heart you bring to this work every single day. You are essential to who we are, and we are better because of you.
